Sudoroso e inhibido por tan presuntuosos complejos, busca en la autoctonía el lujo que se le negaba, y acorralado entre esa pequeñez y el espejismo de las realizaciones europeas, revisa sus datos, pero ha olvidado lo esencial, que el plasma de su autoctonía, es tierra igual que la de Europa.


A continuación autor expone su poética:


Lo único que crea cultura es el paisaje y eso lo tenemos de maestra monstruosidad, sin que nos recorra el cansancio de los crepúsculos críticos.


La expresión americana recoge cinco conferencias que dictara el escritor cubano José Lezama Lima (1910-1976) en el centro de altos estudios del Instituto Nacional de Cultura de La Habana en enero de 1957. Incluye las siguientes conferencias:


I. Mitos y cansancio clásico

II. La curiosidad barroca

III. El romanticismo y el hecho americano

IV. Nacimiento de la expresión criolla

V. Sumas críticas del americano

Este libro todo es una invención poética de América y de lo americano. Lezama Lima consigue no una reconstrucción artística de la historia sino algo aun más ambicioso, la creación poética de lo americano. América pasa de ser un objeto o tema de meditación a convertirse en una realidad poética.
