La Russia, uno Stato di vecchia indipendenza, che incarna il ruolo mondiale di superpotenza che era stato dell'Urss.
Che la Russia postsovietica sia uno Stato indipendente sembrerebbe ovvio da tutti i punti di vista. Si tratta però dell'unica tra le quindici repubbliche che hanno formato l'URSS a non avere mai dichiarato ufficialmente questa sua indipendenza. Una volta prese le distanze dall'Unione Sovietica, diciassette mesi prima della sua dissoluzione (1991), con una dichiarazione di sovranità, la Russia si è limitata a conservare lo spazio rimasto dalla secessione delle altre repubbliche federate: uno spazio ancora immenso, pari a un nono della superficie terrestre, dislocato per un quarto in Europa e per tre quarti in Asia. In pratica, la Russia ha mantenuto i due terzi del territorio e il 50,8% della popolazione dell'URSS, di cui si è presentata al mondo come l'erede di fatto, incarnando essa stessa il ruolo mondiale di superpotenza che era stato dell'Urss. Sul versante interno, nonostante la finzione istituzionale che presentava agli occhi del mondo l'Unione Sovietica come una federazione di repubbliche uguali, nella realtà la Russia si era dimostrata la più "uguale" delle altre, avendo condiviso -e assunto- dell'URSS la capitale politica nonché la direzione del Partito comunista, delle forze armate, della polizia politica e, in pratica, dell'intera società sovietica.

Sergio Salvi è nato nel 1932 a Firenze, dove vive.
