La hija del aire es un drama histórico escrito por Pedro Calderón de la Barca en 1653, que toma como base la historia mitológica de Semíramis, la legendaria reina de Asiria y fundadora de Babilonia. La obra se centra en la figura de esta mujer fuerte y seductora, marcada por una vida de violencia desde su nacimiento.

La obra se divide en dos partes, cada una estrenada en días distintos de noviembre de 1653, y se presenta en un entorno palaciego ante el rey Felipe IV. En la primera parte, la trama gira en torno a la acusación de usurpación que hace el rey de Lidia, Lidoro, contra Semíramis. Este señala que el poder legítimo corresponde a Ninias, el hijo de Semíramis. Lo que sigue es una guerra y una serie de intrigas políticas que reflejan las tensiones entre diferentes modelos de gobierno, desde la tiranía personalista hasta el populismo.

El personaje de Semíramis es especialmente interesante, ya que su gobierno está impulsado por una pasión desmesurada por el poder y por un ejercicio tiránico del mismo. En contraposición, Ninias, su hijo, representa un modelo de gobierno imprudente y negligente, lo que lleva al país a la inestabilidad política y social.

Calderón de la Barca utiliza la obra para reflexionar sobre los peligros inherentes a los excesos en el gobierno, especialmente cuando los intereses personales prevalecen sobre el bienestar colectivo. A través de los personajes y sus acciones, la obra examina las complejidades y las implicaciones éticas de diferentes modelos de liderazgo y gobierno, convirtiéndose en una crítica profunda a los vicios del poder.

La escena de la primera jornada nos introduce en un ambiente de expectación y conflicto. Entre salvas y músicas, se presenta un contraste que refleja las tensiones políticas y emocionales de la obra. El personaje de Tiresias, un sacerdote vestido de pieles largas, añade un elemento de misterio y augurio a la trama. Su confusión y miedo ante los diferentes sonidos de guerra y amor sirven como presagio de los eventos complejos y tumultuosos que se desarrollarán más adelante.
