La hija del mar es la primera novela romántica de Rosalía de Castro, publicada en 1859. En ella podemos observar temas como


la reivindicación de la condición femenina,

la presencia de un narrador femenino,

la defensa de los desprotegidos,

el amor por la naturaleza gallega -que aparecerá en toda su producción posterior-

y los datos autobiográficos siempre presentes en su obra.

Se trata de un relato reivindicativo en el que dos mujeres defienden su honra en medio del acoso masculino.

El prólogo de La hija del mar supone todo un alegato de empoderamiento femenino:


Porque todavía no les es permitido a las mujeres escribir lo que sienten y lo que saben.


La novela trata sobre la vida de dos mujeres, Teresa y su hija adoptiva, Esperanza, que pasan de unas vidas humildes pero felices y pacíficas a un lujo que les cuesta la libertad e incluso su relación madre-hija.

Es esta una obra típicamente romántica. Teresa es abandonada en la niñez por su madre y en la juventud por su marido, solo acompañada por el mar. A este padecimiento se le suma la muerte de su único hijo, fruto de aquel amor.

Sin embargo, la vida la va a reconfortar con la crianza de una hija adoptiva, Esperanza, y la sorpresiva aparición de un marido. Este ya no será aquel que fue sino un hombre rico y autoritario que quiere dominar el espíritu de su ya indomable esposa y deseará seducir a la joven Esperanza. Ambas mujeres se impondrán finalmente.

Con La hija del mar Rosalía quiere dar voz a las mujeres sin voz. La autora habla de las desheredadas de la historia. Quizá por esta razón el punto de vista de la novela es una narradora femenina que debe defender su honor en medio de un ambiente sexista, tremendamente opresivo.

Rosalia de Castro (1837-1885). Espana. Nacio en Santiago de Compostela, hija de padres desconocidos. En su infancia demostro buenas actitudes para el arte. Se caso con Manuel Martinez Murguia, erudito cronista gallego y tuvo seis hijos. Rosalia nunca disfruto de una buena salud. Murio de cancer a los cuarenta y ocho anos en su casa de Padron. Todos sus hijos habian muerto antes que ella.
