Ce livre traite de la survie du fran�ais en milieu anglophone. Province de l'Ouest canadien, le Manitoba pr�sente une population anglophone et une minorit� francophone ancienne. Ce livre d�crit la vari�t� de fran�ais en usage au Manitoba, particuli�rement son histoire et son lexique. Cette description se fonde sur une enqu�te de terrain, dite de 'disponibilit� lexicale', dont le but est d'�valuer le vocabulaire actif des jeunes. Conduite en neuf points de la province pendant les ann�es 1990, aupr�s de 344 �coliers d'une moyenne d'�ge de onze ans, notre enqu�te a rassembl� plus de 130.000 mots (occurrences), g�n�ralement concrets, issus de seize champs s�mantiques (parties du corps, v�tements, maison, meubles de la maison, nourriture, objets plac�s sur la table, cuisine, �cole, chauffage et �lectricit�, ville, village, moyens de transport, travaux des champs et jardinage, animaux, jeux et distractions, m�tiers). Trait�es par un programme informatique sp�cialement con�u pour cette recherche en statistique lexicale, les donn�es recueillies composent un corpus de 19.250 mots diff�rents, annex�s en fin de volume. L'indice de disponibilit� de chaque mot a �t� calcul� (fr�quence d'un mot dans un champ s�mantique donn�). Les mots d'indice �lev� sont les plus utiles � enseigner et � int�grer dans les dictionnaires. Constituant le 'vocabulaire disponible' au Manitoba, ce corpus lexicom�trique peut �tre abord� selon plusieurs perspectives: lexicologique, sociolinguistique, p�dagogique et lexicographique Il repr�sente le vocabulaire fondamental d'aujourd'hui et il permet d'analyser ses innovations et ses moyens de d�fense.
