En La lozana andaluza Francisco Delicado describe la vida de los bajos fondos de Roma durante el primer tercio del siglo XVI. Su relato pone atención especial a la comunidad de judíos españoles que se trasladaron progresivamente a Roma luego de la instauración del Santo Oficio en España, en 1481.

Se trata de un relato libertino, pues parte de las propias experiencias del autor en los barrios prostibularios de Roma. Sin embargo, las alusiones sexuales son metáforas de enorme fuerza expresiva:


Por mi vida, que tan bien batís vos el hierro como aquel herrero! A tiempo y fuerte, que es acero! Mi vida, ya no más, que basta hasta otro día, que yo no puedo mantener la tela, y lo demás sería gastar lo bueno. Dormí, que almorzar quiero en levantándome.


La lozana andaluza fue descubierta en el siglo XIX en la Biblioteca Imperial de Viena. En la edición no constaban ni el autor ni el impresor, por lo que durante cierto tiempo se consideró anónima. Resulta irónico que sea en nuestros tiempos un texto clásico mientras que la obra de carácter científico de Francisco Delicado hoy apenas despierta interés.

Esta obra está considerada como parte de la tradición de La Celestina (escrita unos treinta años antes por Fernando de Rojas). Comparten ambas la estructura dialogada, el tema tratado y el enfoque picaresco propio de este género. Cabe hacer también énfasis, en las frecuentes menciones que, de la obra de Rojas se hacen en La Lozana a lo largo del relato.

Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo incluye La lozana andaluza en sus Orígenes de la novela y allí escribió


No es comedia, ni novela tampoco, sino un retablo más bien cinematógrafo de figurillas obscenas, que pasan haciendo muecas y cabriolas, en diálogos incoherentes. En rigor, puede decirse que la Lozana no está escrita, sino hablada, y esto es lo que da tan singular color a su estilo y constituye su verdadera originalidad.



Francisco Delicado (1485-1535). Espana. Parece que Francisco Delicado era judio converso, y se dice que huyo de Espana en 1528 perseguido por la Inquisicion;estudio medicina y escribio sobre la sifilis;ademas de trabajar en una imprenta veneciana. No se conocen muchos datos de su vida.
