The little girl is asking her grandfather for a new doll after she abused and destroyed the first one. She is frustrated because she wants a doll that will last forever. But, when her grandfather gets her a new doll that can withstand all the punishment, frustration sets in again because she is not satisfied when her new doll doesn't break. Now she wants to go back to the breakable doll. The author makes important comments about life and how it would be unfortunate if people and things lasted forever. Ironically, life would be even more frustrating and people would not know what to do with everlasting life and fortune. With his exchange with his granddaughter about the doll the grandfather recalls when he was young and he also wanted everything to last forever. But, as he got older, he realized that "Fragility is a positive thing! Disappointments cannot be avoided even by putting limits on time. There is nothing as unfortunate as that which is set in stone, nor as efficient as that which is resilient. Life nurtures itself on elements that are transitory and flexible".

Después de destruir a golpes su primera muñeca la niña le pide otra a su abuelo. Se siente frustrada y ahora quiere una muñeca que le dure toda la vida, indestructible, aunque también la maltrate como la primera. Cando el abuelo le compra una muñeca nueva que puede aguantar todo el castigo y abuso, la niña se frustra de nuevo porque ahora no está satisfecha por no poder quebrar y hacer pedazos la nueva muñeca a pesar de los golpes que le da. Entonces le pide al abuelo que le compre otra muñeca como la primera, la que sí cambia y se debilita con los golpes. Ahora, la niña parece estar más contenta con la fragilidad de la muñeca. El autor del cuento hace comentarios importantes sobre la vida y dice que sería muy desafortunado si la gente y las cosas duraran para siempre. Irónicamente, la vida sería más frustrante y triste porque la gente no sabría qué hacer con la vida y la fortuna eternas. En este intercambio con su nieta sobre la muñeca el abuelo recuerda cuando era joven y también quería que las cosas duraran para siempre. Pero, al envejecer, se da cuenta que "La fragilidad es una cosa positiva. Ni aun reduciendo la durabilidad de las cosas se evita su aburrimiento. No hay nada tan espantoso como lo sólido ni tan eficaz como lo resistente. La vida se nutre de cosas pasajeras y movibles."
