Questo libro non vuole essere solamente una raccolta di preghiere ed inni atti a testimoniare una spiritualità di cui oggi si è perduta la memoria e l'eredità, quanto soprattutto un viatico di comprensione dei tormenti e degli aneliti che animavano questi antichi uomini che hanno calpestato la terra d'Egitto, dell'Iran, della Grecia e di Roma.
Un intimo tormento il loro, non frutto di un disagio psicologico o sociale, ma reso pulsante dalla nostalgia del ritorno al Pleroma: l'empireo attorno all'Essere. Tale anelito alla trascendenza non solamente è ostacolato dalla povertà degli strumenti a disposizione dell'uomo e dalla sua condizione di dimentico in terra straniera, ma anche e soprattutto dal potere della materia, dalla circolarità del tempo e dagli inganni del Demiurgo. Ecco quindi che il grido dell'anima gnostica, oramai consapevole della blasfema schiavitù carnale e psichica insita nella creazione demiurgia, si alza verso il dominio dell'Essere. E' con struggenti componimenti che lo scuote dalla sua indifferenza nei confronti di una creazione aliena al suo volere, costringendolo a guardare verso il mondo del caos sottostante!
Per rappresentare questo composito affresco, ho cercato di raccogliere quanto a mio giudizio maggiormente significativo e capace di offrire uno sguardo oltre il velo delle semplici parole fini a se stesse, che le varie comunità gnostiche hanno espresso nel corso della loro esistenza. In tale ottica, particolare rilievo assumono gli Inni e le Odi raccolti nella Pistis Sophia e gli scritti dei Mandei e dei Manichei. Sono presenti inoltre estratti dal: Vangelo di Verità, dal Vangelo degli Egiziani, dal Mazdeismo, dal Vangelo di Tommaso, dagli Atti di Tommaso Apostolo, dal Vangelo di Bartolomeo, dagli scritti sethiani e barbelognostici, dal Libro di Jeu, dal Tuono della Mente Perfetta, dal Trattato sulla Resurrezione, dall'Apocalisse di Giacomo e altri testi sapienziali dello gnosticismo alessandrino ed iranico.
