La forte présence en France de ressortissants d'anciennes colonies est le principal paradoxe de ce que l'on appelle désormais la question post-coloniale. Dans le cas de l'Algérie en particulier, on aurait pu penser que les combattants d'une longue et douloureuse guerre d'indépendance ne voudraient plus avoir de liens avec l'ancienne métropole. Or de nombreux patriotes sont venus, après 1962, rejoindre de ce côté-ci de la Méditerranée des Algériens déjà installés pour des raisons économiques et qui n'entendaient pas rentrer chez eux. Les uns et les autres sont devenus majoritaires dans les grands ensembles qui avaient été bâtis pour des Français à la périphérie des villes au cours des années 1960 et 1970.
Depuis trente ans, ces grands ensembles ou ces cités sont le lieu d'émeutes déclenchées par des jeunes d'origine immigrée victimes de discriminations et du chômage. Souvent ces jeunes ne savent ni ne comprennent pourquoi ils sont nés en France et pourquoi leurs pères et leurs grands-pères se sont établis dans un pays qu'ils avaient âprement combattu. Leur sentiment de déracinement se double d'une fréquente ignorance des circonstances dans lesquelles leur patrie a autrefois été conquise et mise sous tutelle. Ils ne connaissent pas toujours non plus les débats et les conflits qui ont pu diviser les mouvements pour l'indépendance.
Afin d'éclairer la lanterne des ex-colonisés comme des ex-colonisateurs et de clarifier cette très complexe question post-coloniale, Yves Lacoste propose une analyse géopolitique et un récit historique. Analyse géopolitique pour décrire les rivalités de pouvoir qui ont facilité les entreprises européennes (notamment la traite des esclaves), récit historique pour comprendre le déroulement des conquètes puis des luttes de libération. Cette démarche se veut une contribution à l'apaisement des malentendus, des ressentiments, des rancoeurs.
