La raison est-elle cette facult� naturelle en l'homme qu'a d�crite une certaine tradition philosophique ? En v�rit� non, elle a une histoire, ou plut�t, est histoire. Configuration culturelle, elle a un lieu et une date de naissance, et un devenir. La question aujourd'hui, qui ne para�tra intempestive qu'aux aveugles, est de savoir si nous n'assistons pas � son d�clin.

Analyse de la notion. Sous le terme de logos, le monde grec n'entend pas une propri�t� qui ferait de l'homme une exception dans la nature, mais la structure complexe des harmoniques en lesquelles se dit l'identit� de la pens�e et de l'�tre. Le XVII^e si�cle, identifiant la raison � l'humanit�, en consacre la souverainet� sur le monde. Mais n'y a-t-il pas l� une illusion par laquelle, les pouvoirs de la rationalit� semblant pourtant ainsi affirm�s, la puissance lib�ratrice de la raison est en fait occult�e ? Sans doute, cette puissance est-elle pleinement av�r�e par une raison saisie dans son mouvement dialectique et sa fondamentale historicit�. Mais le r�gne apparemment sans partage de la rationalit� calculatrice � l'�poque contemporaine ne signe-t-il pas, sinon la mort, du moins l'atrophie de la raison ?

�tude de textes. Platon, dans un texte fameux du Ph�don, donne l'occasion � Socrate d'�noncer la d�cision rationnelle fondatrice de la philosophie. Cette d�cision, bien loin de nous exiler en quelque lieu �tranger, nous renvoie � nous-m�mes et � l'essentielle question de notre bonheur: le Livre X de l'�thique � Nicomaque d'Aristote exprime cette solidarit� forte de la rationalit� et de la vie heureuse. Tournant le dos � l'exigence eud�moniste, la Critique de la raison pratique de Kant fait de la raison, saisie en sa pleine autod�termination, le fondement de la norme morale. C'est de l'abandon de cette vis�e normative que Heidegger, dans Que veut dire penser ?, prend acte en opposant les droits de la pens�e aux pr�tentions de la raison.
