Afin de mieux comprendre les actions terroristes d'Al-Qa�da et des groupes qui lui sont associ�s et d'y appliquer la th�orie de l'action rationnelle, les attentats � la bombe perp�tr�s entre 2002 et 2007 ont �t� analys�s et compar�s � ceux men�s par une organisation terroriste bien plus traditionnelle, l'Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA). Comme on pouvait s'y attendre, les attentats perp�tr�s par Al-Qa�da et ses affili�s ont fait beaucoup plus de victimes que ceux men�s par l'ETA, m�me en excluant les attentats du 11 septembre 2001. Les analyses montrent que les groupes islamistes m�nent fr�quemment des attentats dans le but de faire un grand nombre de victimes, alors que d'autres groupes terroristes tentent de limiter le nombre de victimes, pour des raisons politiques et id�ologiques. La rationalit� des groupes terroristes traditionnels est bien �tablie dans la litt�rature et est renforc�e par ces analyses. Cependant, celles-ci sugg�rent �galement l'application de la th�orie de l'action rationnelle au terrorisme islamique religieux. Si le terrorisme causant des pertes massives et le terrorisme suicide peuvent sembler irrationnels, lorsque l'on consid�re les objectifs du terrorisme islamique religieux ainsi que le contexte religieux et politique dans lequel ces organisations op�rent, l'action rationnelle constitue une explication valable.
