Présentation de l'ouvrage

La philosophie zen était particulièrement adaptée aux samouraïs du Japon. Les principes moraux élevés du bouddhisme, lorsqu'ils furent adoptés et adaptés par les guerriers japonais qui devinrent les samouraïs, créèrent une philosophie austère d'une beauté et d'une profondeur singulières. Ses exigences caractéristiques de contrôle strict du corps et de l'esprit furent illustrées par d'anciens moines guerriers dont l'attitude sereine, même face à une mort certaine, les rendait très admirés, même par leurs ennemis.

La philosophie zen est peut-être la plus incomprise des philosophies morales du monde. Bien qu'elle soit souvent classée parmi les religions, elle est souvent considérée par ses adeptes comme une philosophie utilitaire, un ensemble de préceptes moraux rationnels ou, plus simplement encore, comme un état de l'être. Le but de la pratique du zen est de devenir éclairé et d'atteindre la béatitude du nirvana.

Atteindre le nirvana signifie rejoindre l'état d'extinction de la douleur et l'annihilation du péché. La philosophie zen ne cherche jamais à réaliser la béatitude dans un endroit paradisiaque, ni ne croit que le royaume de la réalité transcende l'univers phénoménal, ni n'admet la superstition de l'immortalité, ni ne soutient que notre monde est le meilleur de tous les mondes possibles, ni ne conçoit la vie simplement comme une bénédiction. C'est dans cette vie, pleine d'imperfections, de misère et de souffrances que la philosophie zen espère réaliser sa béatitude. C'est dans ce monde, imparfait, changeant et mouvant, que la philosophie zen trouve la lumière divine qu'il vénère. C'est dans cet univers phénoménal de limitation et de relativité que la philosophie zen vise à atteindre le plus haut nirvana.
