La historia narra las aventuras de Quetzalí, un quetzal hembra de la selva petenera, cuando decide viajar al sur para rescatar a su pareja, Quetzalkín, quien ha sido raptado por cazadores furtivos; durante el viaje enfrenta distintos desafíos, como la falta de permiso migratorio, la persecución de cuervos (la Ley del cielo) o el intento de robo por parte de una pandilla de mapaches, pero logra superarlos con ayuda de sus viejos amigos, como el mono Koko, y de otros nuevos que conoce durante la aventura. Logrará llegar a tiempo nuestra heroína para salvar a su pareja?
Este libro pertenece a la colección Germinal, cuyo objetivo es hacer germinar en niños y adolescentes el gusto y el placer por la lectura hasta formar hábito lector, para ello se les ofrecen historias de su interés, según su edad: 7-9 años (pestaña amarilla), 10-12 años (pestaña roja), 13-15 años (pestaña blanca) y 16-18 años (pestaña negra). Ángel Solórzano es el segundo de cuatro hermanos. Desde adolescente encontró un gran interés en la literatura y un gusto por la escritura. Por esos años comenzó a escribir sus primeros cuentos cortos y poemas. Fue un excelente estudiante, apasionado por las materias numéricas y científicas, lo que le permitió ganar múltiples premios en dichas disciplinas. Estudió en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música y en la Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. Se graduó de ingeniero agrónomo. Es amante de la naturaleza y de los animales. En ese contexto surgió la idea de escribir su primera obra literaria: La travesía del quetzal. Entre sus escritores favoritos se encuentran George R. R. Martin, J. K. Rowling, Robert Galbraith, Walter Tevis, Stephanie Meyer y Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
Ángel Solórzano considera que la naturaleza aún tiene mucho por mostrarnos y nosotros por aprender de ella. En cuanto a su inspiración literaria, afirma que le gusta imaginar que va en busca de una historia, de una voz, y que, al encontrarla, si se presta para un lector (niño, joven o adulto), ajusta los tornillos finales para que el resultado llegue de una mejor manera.
