Lady Xiansa's Guide to Beginning Korean is a practical manual for first-year Korean students who want the most useful grammar and relevant vocabulary to quickly promote speaking and writing skills. Many textbooks focus on travel phrases, situations in Korea, school, or very limited small talk while providing overwhelming lists of vocabulary or inconsistent verb speech levels. This guide aims to lay the foundation for further academic study of Korean, including an overview of how the writing system functioned in the past as well as acknowledging the importance and usefulness of hanja while limiting the use of romanization. While not a self-study guide, this textbook should be a good reference tool for all students of Korean, and has appropriate vocabulary for modern college students and adult workers talking about a wide range of personal topics.

Lady Xiansa, aka Wendelin Gray, has been blogging about East Asian language and literature since 2013 and features books written in Korean, Chinese and Japanese. Originally trained in Russian language, an opportunity to work with Chinese immigrants shortly after completing her degree caused her to switch languages and regions of study. She has traveled all over East Asia, visiting 16 cities in the region. She was a substitute Beginning Korean teacher for about six months and has government certification in both Chinese and Korean. Additionally, she has been a core volunteer with the Silk Screen Asian Arts Organization in Pittsburgh, PA, since 2007, and speaks regularly for various organizations on East Asian culture and media. She has written four novels and won the 2016 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards bronze in Young Adult Fiction E-book for her horror novel The Haunting at Ice Pine Peak.
