A story about the unbreakable bond between two unlikely heroes - a dog and a robot.

Laika - a stray dog once wandering the streets of Moscow - now hurtles through space aboard Sputnik 2, chosen to become the first dog to orbit Earth. But as the spacecraft overheats and fear sets in, Laika is left wondering why the humans she trusted have abandoned her, unaware that her journey is one-way.

Far in the future, in a shattered city scarred by war, a damaged military robot named Rove7 awakens. With fragmented memories and no clear purpose, he must piece together who he is - and what remains worth fighting for.

When a mysterious portal tears open the sky, Laika is pulled into this broken world. Against all odds, she and Rove7 form a powerful connection. Driven by instinct and something deeper, Rove7 becomes her protector in a world filled with danger.

But hostile machines are closing in, and forces beyond their understanding threaten to tear them apart. As the past reaches out to reclaim Laika, one question remains:

Can loyalty, courage, and companionship survive against fate and impossible odds?

Beautifully illustrated, Laika's Robot explores themes of friendship, loneliness, loyalty, the beauty of kindness, and the importance of making the most of the time we have with the ones we love.

About The Author

Lyall, Ad: - A.D. Lyall writes speculative fiction. A graduate of RMIT University's Professional Writing and Editing course, he has worked as a copy and manuscript editor. He loves fantasy for the complex worlds it contains, science fiction for glimpses into possible futures, and horror for how it can reveal the human condition within terrible circumstances. He also enjoys the interplay between characters and the natural and created worlds. Colour, sound and elements of nature all feature prominently in his writing. The story of Laika has always fascinated him. Laika's Robot is his attempt to imagine something better for the little space dog destined to die alone. His debut book, The Last to Go, was shortlisted for an Aurealis award in 2024 (Best Science Fiction Novella). He lives in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia.
