L'Amico Fritz, also known as Friend Fritz, is a three-act lyric comedy written by Italian composer Pietro Mascagni and first performed in 1891. The story follows Fritz, a wealthy landowner who is known for his bachelor lifestyle and aversion to marriage. However, when he meets Suzel, a young peasant girl, he finds himself falling in love with her. Despite the objections of his friends, Fritz decides to propose to Suzel, but she initially rejects him. Through a series of misunderstandings and romantic gestures, Fritz and Suzel eventually confess their love for each other and agree to marry. The opera is set in the countryside of Alsace, France, and features elements of both German and Italian music. The score is known for its light, romantic melodies and use of folk tunes. The libretto, written by P. Suardon and G. Civinini, is based on a French novel by Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian.L'Amico Fritz was well-received upon its premiere and has since become one of Mascagni's most popular works. It is often performed in opera houses around the world and has been adapted for film and television. The themes of love and class differences, as well as the charming characters and catchy music, continue to make L'Amico Fritz a beloved classic of the operatic repertoire. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
