This book is all about converting wastelands which have come up by large scale deforestation to accommodate urbanization, into arable lands to increase tree cover.A short history has been given about the progress of scientific forestry in India from its inception in 1874 to the present. A chapter has also been added on the type of wastelands that have come up and how the Government of India is dealing with them. Then suggestions have been made on how these wastelands can be made into botanical gardens which will be intellectual centres, and public gardens, parks etc for relaxation and entertainment of the general public in urban areas. This will also make up for the large scale deforestation and contribute towards increase in tree cover.

The author is a Research Scientist who began her career in Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, India in 1961. She has worked on a number of national level and international research projects such as the FAO project of DANIDA on seed procurement and tree improvement. She retired from government service as Head of the Seed Science and Technology Department of The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Coimbatore in 1992. During her service she participated in a number of Forestry Conferences, Symposiums, Workshops, and Working Group Meetings on different aspects of forestry and has 45 research papers to her credit. After retiring from government service, she published three much needed text books on forestry through traditional publishers and those are (1)Taxonomy of Bamboos published by APC publishers New Delhi in1997 (2) Seed Science and Technology of Indian Forestry Species published by Allied Publishers Ltd New Delhi in 1998 (3) Tree Breeding for Genetic Improvement of Tropical Tree Species published by Allied Publishers Pvt Ltd in 2006. After she retired from government service, she also took up a research project of her own, on origin of life and evolution of life-forms which she called 'A Search For Truth' and published two books along with a coauthor through Amazon Create Space Self Publishing called (1) " The Great Eternal Truths" in 2014 and the other (2) "Perception or Reality and Social Consequences" in 2016. She then continued her research on the role of the soul in the body of individual life-forms and the gradual awakening of consciousness in each, and the evidence of this awakening in plant and animal forms; thus tracing the different stages of evolution till it reached the human form. She then published a book on her own called "Individual Human Soul Before and After Death" through Amazon Create Space Self Publishing in 2016. As these are heavy subjects, she decided to take a break and write this present book on how India is dealing with changes in environment and factors contributing towards it, because changes in environment and their effects have become an important issue the world over.
