Die Wahrnehmung der Lernerfahrungen von Fremdsprachenlernenden in der nachberuflichen Lebensphase steht daher im Mittelpunkt dieser Studie. Die aus der empirischen Untersuchung entstandenen Lernendentypen bestätigen einen angenommenen starken Zusammenhang zwischen Lebens-, Berufs- und Bildungserfahrungen und Sprachlernaktivitäten im Alter. Selbstbestimmtes Lernen und selbstbestimmtes Handeln scheinen in einem Zusammenhang zu stehen. Somit ergibt sich für die Unterrichtspraxis mit Älteren die Notwendigkeit einer gezielten Lehrendenfortbildung. Es geht darum, verinnerlichte Altersstereotype kritisch zu hinterfragen, um diesen im Unterricht aktiv entgegentreten zu können. Lernen im Alter ist, so wird auch in diesem Buch aufgezeigt, nicht nur eine Möglichkeit, sondern auch eine Notwendigkeit, um sich selbst als aktives Mitglied der Gesellschaft zu erfahren und ein autonomes Leben zu führen.

Alexandra Edlinger, geboren 1980 und aufgewachsen in Niederösterreich, absolvierte das Studium der angewandten Sprachwissenschaft und Sonder- und Heilpädagogik in Wien, Österreich sowie Lund, Schweden. Sie arbeitete als Sprachlehrerin und Bildungsprojektmanagerin unter anderem in Frankreich, Vietnam und Spanien. An der Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz in Österreich dissertierte sie über das Lernen von Fremdsprachen im Alter.
