Oggi, l'aromaterapia è una medicina complementare ampiamente praticata che utilizza oli essenziali di piante aromatiche, fiori, foglie, semi, cortecce e frutti per aiutare la cura. Gli oli essenziali sono di solito estratti con un processo di distillazione a vapore e sono spesso utilizzati:

Come funziona?

L'aromaterapia agisce sul nostro olfatto e attraverso l'assorbimento nel flusso sanguigno. Circa il 15 per cento dell'aria che inaliamo è diretto verso il tetto del naso, dove i recettori olfattivi portano gli odori direttamente ad una parte del cervello chiamata sistema limbico.

"Si ritiene che le civiltà antiche usassero l'aromaterapia in molti modi e per molti motivi, come i massaggi, i bagni, come medicina e persino per l'imbalsamazione dei corpi.
Quest'area è legata all'istinto, all'umore e all'emozione e si ritiene che l'aromaterapia possa stimolare il rilascio di sostanze chimiche che hanno un ruolo nel rilascio delle emozioni (pensate a come anche il semplice odore della cera per pavimenti possa riportarvi rapidamente in classe).

Qual è la storia dell'aromaterapia?

Si ritiene che le civiltà antiche usassero l'"aromaterapia" in molti modi e per molti motivi come i massaggi, i bagni, come medicina e anche per l'imbalsamazione dei corpi. Il concetto fu probabilmente utilizzato in origine e contemporaneamente in Cina, Egitto, Medio Oriente e dai nativi americani, per essere poi introdotto in Europa dai romani.

La pratica dell'aromaterapia moderna è stata attribuita principalmente al chimico francese René-Maurice Gattefossé. Ha iniziato la ricerca sui poteri curativi degli oli essenziali nel primo quarto di secolo dopo aver osservato come l'olio di lavanda sembrasse aiutare la guarigione di una grave ustione da un lato.

Nel 1937 pubblicò anche il primo trattato sull'argomento: "L'aromaterapia di Gattefossé", pubblicazione ancora oggi disponibile. La parola aromaterapia deriva dal greco, dalle parole "aroma" che significa profumo o odore gradevole e "therapeia" che significa guarigione.

L'aromaterapia può davvero essere utilizzata per curare le malattie?


L'aromaterapia sembra avere il suo effetto più benefico su disturbi minori, problemi digestivi, sindrome premestruale, malattie legate allo stress e alcuni problemi della pelle. Alcuni oli essenziali come l'olio dell'albero del tè sono ampiamente utilizzati per le loro proprietà antisettiche.

È estremamente improbabile che l'aromaterapia possa curare le malattie più importanti, quindi non ne raccomandiamo l'uso in questi casi come sostituto della medicina convenzionale. Tuttavia, può essere utilizzato per alleviare lo stress psicologico vissuto da persone che soffrono di una grave malattia.
