Geboren 1948 in Illnau, Kanton Zürich. Studium der Physik an der ETH Zürich. Diplom 1972 und Promotion 1977. 1978-1980 Forschungsaufenthalt an der University of California in Berkeley, USA und am Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Ab 1980 wieder an der ETH Zürich. 1986 Privatdozent und 1996-2013 Titularprofessor. 1990 Gastprofessor Rice Universität in Houston, USA und dort 1994-2013 Adjunct Professor. 2003 und 2010 Gastprofessur Université du Littoral - Côte d'Opal, Dunkerque, France. 2013 Prof. em. Seit 2014 verschiedentliche Gastprofessuren, u. a. an der Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Hefei, China.

1985-1990 Vorstandsmitglied der Quantum Electronics Division, European Physical Society und Herausgeber "Quantum Electronics Division Newsletter".1993-2017 Vorstandsmitglied der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Optik und Mikroskopie. Seit 1999 Fellow der Optical Society of America (OSA). 2001-2007 Topical Editor Applied Optics. Seit 2012 OSA traveling lecturer.

Arbeitsgebiete: Laser, insbesondere Neuentwicklungen abstimmbarer Infrarotlaser. Laserspektroskopische Anwendungen in der chemischen Analytik, u. a. im Umwelt- und medizinischen Bereich. Wechselwirkung von Laserstrahlung mit Materie. Laserphotoakustische und -photothermische Untersuchungen an Spurengasen, Flüssigkeiten und an beschichteten Festkörperoberflächen.
