" L'idée de Dieu a joué un tel rôle dans les destinées humaines, elle a pénétré si profondément les moeurs, le langage et jusqu'à l'hérédité des peuples, que celui qui en est aujourd'hui dépourvu, celui qui n'a pas reçu cette idée en héritage et n'a pu l'acquérir par éducation, doit, me semble-t-il, être considéré comme un monstre par la majorité des hommes. Et s'il arrive que le monstre soit doué de sens moral (l'hérédité est si capricieuse dans la génération sexuelle qui est la nôtre !), s'il arrive que l'athée soit vertueux, son cas sera en même temps tératologique et paradoxal. Beaucoup de nos congénères affirment en effet qu'ils sont honnêtes, parce qu'ils craignent Dieu; ils ne peuvent concevoir par conséquent qu'un athée ne soit pas vicieux et criminel, comme ils seraient eux-mêmes sans leur foi. Peut-être sont-ils trop modestes; peut-être ont-ils en eux des raisons d'être bons et aimables, indépendamment de toute croyance religieuse; mais enfin, il y a des hommes qui sont méchants, cela est certain. J'admets même, volontiers, qu'il y en aurait davantage si quelques-uns d'entre eux n'étaient retenus par la crainte d'un châtiment. Mais de ce que tous les hommes, croyants ou non, ne sont, en dépit de l'éducation, ni également bons ni également honnêtes, je puis bien conclure, sans hardiesse exagérée, qu'il y a, dans le patrimoine héréditaire de chacun de nous, une dose variable de bonté et d'honnêteté. Ces qualités innées nous viennent de nos ancêtres, et ont été acquises par eux comme le nez, la bouche et la logique; cela, pour un évolutionniste, est indéniable; suivant les hasards des accouplements, chaque homme vient au monde avec plus ou moins de nez, plus ou moins de logique, plus ou moins de vertu. L'éducation brode ensuite sur ce canevas; on peut se casser le nez, perdre la raison, et même devenir méchant, ce qui est pourtant plus difficile à beaucoup que de se casser le nez."
