Le dialogue de Plutarque, qui a pour principal sujet les péripéties du rétablissement de la démocratie à Thèbes, donne à Plutarque l'occasion d'exposer les opinions des philosophes sur ce que Socrate appelait son démon ou son esprit familier. Les uns le regardaient comme la pénétration même de son esprit, fruit de sa sagesse et de son expérience, les autres croient qu'il avait réellement auprès de lui un génie, un de ces esprits que les anciens représentaient comme des êtres intermédiaires entre les dieux et les hommes et que ce génie, toujours attaché à ses pas, l'avertissait de tout ce qui pouvait lui être contraire et le retenait lorsqu'il était sur le point de faire quelque démarche qui aurait pu lui nuire. D'autres enfin pensent que ce génie n'était autre chose que la communication même de la Divinité, qui produisait dans l'âme de Socrate une vive impression de sa pensée, et la lui rendait si présente que ce philosophe en avait une vue sensible, qui l'éclairait dans toute sa conduite. Ces réflexions sur le commerce que les dieux et les génies ont avec les hommes sont éclairées par la vision extraordinaire qu'un jeune homme d'Athènes, nommé Timarque, eut dans l'antre de Trophonius, où il était descendu pour consulter la divinité. On retrouve dans cette vision les thèses de Pythagore sur la métempsychose. Le traité d'Apulée, qui porte le même titre que l'ouvrage de Plutarque, est un ouvrage plus technique qui porte sur ce qui différencie les dieux et les démons - qu'il nomme en latin des génies (genii) - et sur les conditions de nos rencontres avec eux. Apulée y revendique Platon pour son maître. C'est un vibrant éloge aussi d'une philosophie si subtile que les modernes semblent en avoir déserté le chemin.
