Le Docteur Bretonneau, éminente figure tourangelle, fit l'objet d'études dont celle du Professeur Émile Aron. La Faculté de médecine de Tours lui consacra une exposition et une conférence en 2005. Inventeur du tube capillaire et des allumettes chimiques, initiateur du vaccin contre la variole, novateur dans le traitement de maladies infectieuses et contagieuses, piétinant les pratiques ancestrales de la saignée et de la diète, s'opposant aux méthodes d'analyses et aux diagnostiques superficiels, primat de la canule de trachéotomie, Bretonneau était l'adversaire des docteurs Diafoirus de son temps. Il créa des ponts entre la médecine, la botanique, la chimie, la technique, la physique, non sans rencontrer d'obstacles ou d'esprits réfractaires.
