Il s'�tait demand� au retour si la prosp�rit� su�doise �tait l'heureux r�sultat du partage des t�ches que l' on disait exemplaire entre le Parti social-d�mocrate su�dois et les possesseurs priv�s des moyens de production - le "mod�le su�dois" - ou si cette prosp�rit� et cette "paix industrielle" qui l'accompagnait n'�taient pas dues principalement � une con-joncture historique et �conomique exceptionnelle dont il n'�tait pas assur� qu'elle se perp�tuerait.
Au cours de l'hiver 1991, l'auteur a revisit� la Su�de � la rencontre de ses interlocuteurs d'alors pour reprendre � vingt ans de distance leurs conversations et v�rifier ensemble comment les id�es du moment avaient subi l'�preuve du temps. Ce livre est le compte rendu de ces deux �poques: vingt ans avant - vingt ans apr�s - offrant de la sorte au lecteur la possibilit� de sa propre d�couverte.
