I molti elementi che costituiscono questo mito hanno trovato pazientemente la loro via, da un passato immemorabile e da luoghi remoti e sconosciuti, fino ad approdare al teatro tragico dell'Atene del V sec. a.C. dove per la prima volta la storia di Edipo ha preso corpo e vita nelle opere dei grandi tragici Eschilo, Sofocle ed Euripide.Della produzione drammatica rappresentata ad Atene nel teatro di Dioniso nel corso della straordinaria stagione culturale che la città visse in quel secolo, solo sei tragedie rimangono per farci conoscere questo mito, e testimoniare il modo in cui il pensiero greco lo ha per la prima volta conosciuto e rielaborato.Questo volume - il primo di una triade - vuole presentare due di queste tragedie, quelle che nella cronologia mitica occupano la posizione centrale: le Fenicie di Euripide (rappresentate con ogni probabilità nel 410 o nel 409 a.C.) ed i Sette contro Tebe di Eschilo (rappresentati nel 467 a.C.). Il testo presenta la parafrasi del testo poetico insieme ad un commento essenziale, evidenziando con chiarezza la struttura del dramma. La parafrasi è preceduta da informazioni essenziali relative alla trama, alla data di rappresentazione, alla tradizione del testo, alla messa in scena e all'assegnazione delle parti agli attori.
