Martin Gertler promovierte 1999 an der Universität Nijmegen (Niederlande) mit einer interdisziplinären Studie über die Rezeption einer TV-Serie. 2002 wurde er Professor für Mediengestaltung (insbesondere audiovisuelle und interaktive Medien), Medienproduktion, Medientheorien und Rezeptionsforschung im Fachbereich Medien der RFH Köln. 2008 wurde er zum Gründungsrektor einer neuen Forschungsuniversität für Weiterbildung in Berlin und zum Universitätsprofessor ernannt. Seit 2011 ist er Gastprofessor für Doktorandenbetreuung und Promotor im berufsbegleitenden Graduiertenkolleg der Universität für Humanistische Studien / Universiteit voor Humanistiek, Utrecht (Niederlande). Seine audiovisuellen Lehrmedien produziert er mit eigenen Mitteln.
