"Lebensstil" ist ein modischer Begriff, der in Tageszeitungen, Szene-Journalen und im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch gegenwärtig Konjunktur hat. Unter "Lebens- stil" wird, wenn er in Zusammenhang mit "Konsum" diskutiert wird, häufig der "spielerische" und distinktive Umgang mit Geld verstanden - und konsumiert wird, was gerade "in" ist. Bereits die soziologischen Klassiker kamen in ihren Analysen des aufkommenden kapitalistischen Wirtschaftssystems aufgrund ihrer Beobachtungen des gro städtischen Lebens zu dem Ergebnis, da sich "sozialer Wandel" und "gesellschaftliche Umstrukturierungen" zuerst und am intensivsten in industrialisierten Gro städten manifestieren. Wird unterstellt, da das Ausma und die Vielschichtigkeit sozialer Ungleichheit und der Lebensstilisierung zuge- nommen haben, dann sollten diese Unterschiede in modernen Gro städten am deutlichsten ausgeprägt sein. Lebensstile, ihre feinen Ausdifferenzierungen und ihre Funktionen als Stilmittel und Distinktionsstrategien können somit insbeson- dere den Städten zugeordnet werden; genauer: den Innenstädten, den attraktiven Wohnlagen, den Treffpunkten einer Kultur- und Freizeitgesellschaft. Auch und gerade der genaue Wohnstandort, das Ausma an Wohnraumkon- sum und die Umgestaltung des Wohnviertels fuhren zu Veränderungen bezüglich des kulturellen Angebots des Gebietes als auch zu erhöhten ökonomischen Anfor- derungen, z. B. durch neue Angebote in den Geschäften und von Wohnraum selbst (verstärkteModernisierungstätigkeit, sprunghaft steigendeMieten, Umwandlungen von Miet- in Eigentumswohnungen). Der vermehrte Zuzug von jüngeren, besser- gestellten und zumeist kinderlosen Haushalten in die gut ausgestatteten, innen- stadtnahen Gebiete ist zugleich Ursache und Folge dieser Entwicklung. In der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion steht die Einbindung des Begriffs "Le- bensstil" in theoretische Überlegungen zur Entwicklung moderner Sozialstruktu- ren noch weitgehend aus.
