El libro tiene el doble propósito de servir como un libro de texto introductorio sobre Geometría Analítica y como guía para entrenar en el planteamiento de problemas al lector que se inicia en el estudio sobre este tema. Está escrito en forma de lecciones orales, procurando tratar un solo concepto cognitivo en cada una de ellas y pensando en las dificultades que tiene el estudiante, en su intención de aprender matemáticas; por lo que, los 61 problemas y ejemplos presentados, en este primer volumen, antes de intentar solucionarlos, primero se discuten, porque un problema bien entendido es un problema parcialmente resuelto. Como consecuencia de tal discusión, surgen con frecuencia, más de un plan para resolverlos, a continuación se desarrolla el plan, sin casi omitir las operaciones necesarias, porque con frecuencia el estudiante no puede alcanzar la solución a partir de un planteamiento hecho. Finalmente se interpreta la solución, geométrica o físicamente, según sea el caso, y en ocasiones se interpreta el significado geométrico o físico de las propias operaciones realizadas. La interpretación de todo lo que hacemos, es hilo conductor del texto. Con frecuencia llegué a decir a mis alumnos en el aula: "si no son capaces de interpretar geométrica o físicamente o de algún modo la matemática que estamos desarrollando, entonces no la están entendiendo sino sólo memorizando y les aseguro que es la peor manera de intentar aprender matemáticas". Cuando el lector hace suya la manera correcta de interpretar sus cálculos, es capaz de autocorregirse, tanto en sus cálculos como en la estrategia propuesta para la solución. Más aún, espero que con este enfoque el estudiante se desprenda de su eterna pregunta: y ..., esto, para qué me sirve? Para lo cual se presentan además, algunas aplicaciones, en las 28 lecciones que se ofrecen en este primer volumen y al final de cada lección se proponen ejercicios y problemas relativos al tema presentado, haciendo en total más de 400, cuyas correspondientes soluciones, a los ejercicios impares y de algunos pares, se ofrecen en las páginas finales del texto. Gran parte de la teoría, se presenta en forma de problemas, con el propósito de que el lector sepa, de dónde viene tal o cual fórmula que utiliza. El texto está tapizado de comentarios, observaciones que sirven para aclarar aún más, los conceptos y también se agregan algunas notas históricas interesantes.
