This concise yet comprehensive volume contains eight lectures on the religions of the world, which were prepared in 1922 by the author himself for delivery before the University of Calcutta. They are necessarily only rapid sketches, but they are written in a very clear and interesting style and form a very fair and non-controversial standpoint. The first lecture begins with some exceedingly interesting reminiscences of writer. These lectures are on the different subjects like ---I. A. Introduction B. Primitive Religion Lecture II. Primitive Religion (concluded) A. The Religion of China B. The Religion of Persia Lecture III. The Religion of India Lecture IV. Buddhism and Buddhist Morality Lecture V. Greek Religion and Morality Lecture VI. Judaism Lecture VII. Muhammadanism Lecture VIII.The impression that religious studies were in a way parasitical, living off methodological developments in literature and history is reasonably accurate. Was there nothing that could be called religion standing independently in the academy? It happens that during the first half of the twentieth century, disciplines called History of Religion or Comparative Religion began to be imported from Europe.

Arthur Anthony Macdonell, FBA (1854 – 930) was a noted Sanskrit scholar. He graduated with classical honours in 1880 and was appointed Taylorian Teacher of German (language) at Oxford. In 1883 he obtained his PhD from the University of Leipzig, and then became Deputy Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford in 1888, and Boden Professor of Sanskrit in 1899 (a post that carried with it a fellowship of Balliol College, Oxford). He edited various Sanskrit texts, wrote a grammar, compiled a dictionary, and published a Vedic grammar, a Vedic Reader, and a work on Vedic mythology; he also wrote a history of Sanskrit.
