Lectures on The Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews is a book written by Robert Lowth, a prominent English bishop and scholar of the 18th century. The book is a collection of lectures that Lowth delivered at the University of Oxford, in which he explores the beauty and significance of the poetry found in the Hebrew Bible. Lowth's lectures are divided into three parts: the first part deals with the principles of Hebrew poetry, the second part focuses on the poetic structure and language of the Psalms, and the third part examines the poetic style of the prophets. Lowth's aim is to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the poetic techniques and themes used by Hebrew poets and to show how these techniques and themes contribute to the religious and cultural significance of the Hebrew Bible. The book is considered a seminal work in the field of biblical studies and has been widely influential in the study of Hebrew poetry and literature.1839. An English divine and Orientalist, Lowth's Lectures on the Sacred Poetry of the Hebrews, exercised a great influence both in England and on the continent. Their chief importance lay in the idea of looking at Old Testament poetry as poetry, and examining it by the ordinary standards of literary criticism. Lowth's presented a new paradigm with his focus on the importance of parallelism of lines. But new studies of the past decade suggest significant adjustments be applied to Lowth's analyses.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
