This book presents a detailed examination of the use of common and civil law to license and govern Islamic financial institutions. Making international comparisons, it discusses specific laws from Iran, where all banking is Shari'ah compliant, to Malaysia and the Gulf, where Islamic financial institutions compete with conventional banks. As most Islamic banks operate under national banking laws, consideration is given as to how - and indeed whether - these need to be amended. The author also shows how the assets and liabilities of Islamic banks differ from their conventional counterparts and what the implications are for risk management. This is crucial for effective regulation, along with transparent governance systems. Governance issues discussed include the inclusion of Shari'ah boards and mudaraba depositors as key stakeholders. The remit of the guide includes regulation pertaining to takaful operators, fund managers and Shari'ah compliant securities issuance, including sukuk. About The Author

Wilson, Rodney: - Professor Wilson was the founder of the Islamic finance programme at Durham University in the United Kingdom where he continues to be an Emeritus Professor. He was a Visiting Professor at the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies in from 2009 untill 2012 and since 2013 has been an Emeritus Professor at the International Centre of Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), Kuala Lumpur. Professor Wilson was awarded the IDB prize in Islamic banking in 2014 in recognition of his academic work on the subject.
