Die hier vorliegende Arbeit untersucht Moglichkeiten, den Gegenstandsbe- reich und die Methodik der politik-soziologischen Einstellungsforschung so zu erweitern bzw. zu strukturieren, daB ein intensiverer Austausch zwischen diesem Zweig der empirischen Sozialforschung und den theoretischen Ansatzen zur Klarung der Dynamik und Funktion kollektiver BewuBtseinsprozesse mog- lich wird. Das Motiv hierzu entstand nicht zuletzt aus dem BemUhen heraus, Erfahrungen zu reflektieren und auszuweiten, die ich wahrend einer mehrjah- rigen Mitarbeit bei einem (noch laufenden) historisch-empirischen For- schungsprojekt machen konnte, das die Entwicklung politischer Einstellungen der Berliner Bevolkerung seit 1945 untersucht. (1) Zu diesen Erfahrungen gehoren u. a. unsere Versuche, die Fruchtbarkeit so- ziologischer Konzepte und Theorien fUr die Deutung der vielschichtigen Pro- zesse kollektiver Einstellungsentwicklungen (2) zu "erproben", die das um- fangreiche, relativ weitgespannte Zeitperioden umfassende Datenmaterial sichtbar werden lieB - oder, umgekehrt bzw. in Wechselwirkung hierzu, aus der historisch informierten Inspektion der Daten in induktiver Weise theo- retische Fragestellungen und Hypothesen zu konstruieren. Obwohl diese Ver- suche in der Regel recht mUhsam und durchaus nicht immer erfolgreich waren, bin ich davon Uberzeugt, daB die oft beschworene Kluft zwischen empirischer Sozialforschung, in diesem Falle speziell der politik-soziologischen Ein- stellungsforschung, und den groBangelegten, sog. "abstrakten" soziologi- schen Theorien (bzw. Theorie-EntwUrfen), wie sie beispielsweise Niklas Luh- mann und JUrgen Habermas vorgelegt haben, geringer ist bzw. sein konnte, als sie zuweilen von denjenigen dargestellt wird, die in der Rolle des "Theoretikers" oder des "Empirikers" (oder gar "Praktikers") ihr Selbstbe- wuBtsein gefunden haben.
