About The Book

Als der Verlag vor knapp drei Jahren an mich mit der Aufforderung herantrat, ein Lehrbuch der Humangenetik etwa in Charakter und Umfang des Lehrbuches der Physiologie von REIN/SCHNEIDER zu schreiben, hatte ich zunachst ernstliche Bedenken. Von vornherein stand fur mich fest, daB es unmoglich ist, die spezielle Humangenetik in dies em Rahmen einigermaBen befriedigend darzustellen. Dafur ist das vorliegende Material zu umfangreich, zu weit verstreut und in der Qualitat zu ungleich. Dazu kommt, daB ein derartiger, methodisch sauberer Versuch den gesetzten Umfang wesentlich hatte uberschreiten mussen. Er ist heute nur auf der Basis eines von vielen Autoren verfaBten Handbuches durchfiihrbar. So kam fur mich von vornherein nur ein Lehrbuch der allgemeinen Human- genetik in Frage. Hier schien mir - trotz des in seiner Art hervorragenden Buches von STERN - im deutschsprachigen Bereich eine genugend ausfuhrliche und in die Tiefe fuhrende Darstellung zu fehlen. Aber sind nicht auch die allgemein- humangenetischen Probleme so vielfaltig verzweigt und reichen sie nicht in so viele verschiedene Nachbarwissenschaften hinein, daB selbst dieses Vorhaben fUr einen einzelnen undurchfiihrbar geworden ist? Mein verehrter, langjahriger fruherer Chef, Herr Professor NACHTSHEIM, war es, der mir zuredete, trotz dieser Bedenken den Versuch zu wagen. Ihm ist es zu danken, daB mir die notwendige MuBe blieb. In ungezahlten Gesprachen wie durch seine Arbeit vermittelte er mir immer erneute Anregungen.
