Auflage des alten "GARRE-BoRCHARD-STICH" "nicht entzogen" werden durfte, das war die Grundkonzeption GARREs, wie er sie im Vorworl zur ersten Auflage 1920 und in seinen Einleitungsausfuhrungen uber "Das Lehren und Lernen der Chirurgie" niedergelegt hat. Damals stand die "groBe Vorlesung" des Lehrstuhlinhabers ganz im Vordergrunde der chirurgischen Grundausbildung. Die Vorlesung "Chirurgische Klinik" sollte den Studierenden vor allem teil- nehmen lassen an der Begegnung zwischen dem Kranken in seiner Not und einem erfahrenen Arzt als seinem Helfer. Die viva vox des Lehrers, sein Umgang mit dem Kranken, seine Untersuchungsmethodik und die Ausstrahlung seiner Personlich- keit waren Grundelement des U nterrichts - hierin sind GARRE und STICH unbestrit- tene Meister gewesen. Demgegenuber war das Lehrbuch vor allem als Forlsetzung des U nterrichtes mit den Mitteln des gedruckten Wortes, der Zeichnung und der Abbildung gedacht: Es sollte den Lehrstoff erganzen, abrunden und vervollstandigen, dies jedoch stets im Geiste der Vorlesung, letztlich zugleich also in der Bindung an das Leit- bild hippokratischen Arzttums. Die Chirurgie war damals noch leicht von einem einzelnen voll uberschaubar gewesen. Was aber hat die Chirurgie allein in den letzten 10 Jahren standig steigende Forlschritte gebracht! Die Spezialisierung schreitet unaufhaltsam weiter. Das chirurgische Gesamtwissen verteilt sich auf viele chirurgische Sonderdiszi- plinen. Sie aIle haben ihre Wurzeln in neuen groBen Forlschritten der Naturwis- senschaft und Technik, sie sind zugleich die Vorbedingungen kommender neuer Forlschritte geworden.
