\"Was das hier Mitgeteilte betrifft, bin ich überall bestrebt gewesen, sowohl durch Selbsthören als auch durch Selbstdenken mir ein unabhängiges Urteil zu bilden. Wo mir nur Beschreibungen anderer zur Verfügung standen, habe ich dies ausdrücklich gesagt; in der Regel bespreche ich nur diejenigen lautlichen Erscheinungen, die ich sehr viele Male und in den verschiedensten Umgebungen gehört habe. Obgleich ich somit von der Genauigkeit der Beobachtungen überzeugt bin, wird der Leser gut tun, sich in keinem einzelnen Fall blind auf mich zu verlassen, sondern alles immer wieder mit kompetenten Eingebornen zu prüfen. Es liegt in der Natur der Sprachlaute, dass man sie von sehr verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten aus behandeln kann. Der Akustiker betrachtet die Laute nur als Schwingungen; er spricht von Schallwellen und deren Fortpflanzung im Raume, und für ihn gibt es zwischen den Lauten, die wir beim Sprechen benutzen, und denen, die z. B. durch ein Saiteninstrument hervorgebracht werden, keinen wesentlichen Unterschied. Der Physiologe hinwiederum sieht in den Sprachlauten nur das Spiel von gewissen Muskeln und Sehnen, für ihn besteht zwischen den Bewegungen, welche die Zunge im Dienste der Sprache und denjenigen, welche sie beim Kauen des Essens ausführt, kein wesentlicher unterschied. Erst für den Sprachforscher ist der Sprachlaut und die ihn hervorrufende Muskeltätigkeit ein Ganzes für sich, was er von allen übrigen Lauten und allen übrigen Muskeltätigkeiten wesentlich unterscheidet.\" [...] Otto Jespersen bietet mit dem vorliegenden Werk einen umfassenden und detailreichen Einblick in die Phonetik der Sprache.
