Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht vor dem Hintergrund von "Die Macht der Bilder" dieser Frage weiter nachzugehen. Dabei geht es vor allem darum, entlang dieser Frage dem Phänomen "Propaganda" näher zu kommen, das seit "Triumph des Willens" und "Olympia" mit dem Namen Leni Riefenstahl in breiten Teilen der öffentlichen Meinung beinahe ebenso eng verknüpft ist, wie mit Joseph Goebbels. Bei der Betrachtung des Werks von Leni Riefenstahl, ihrer Biographie und der kontroversen Diskussion um beides sieht man sich schnell mit Problemen konfrontiert, die in grundsätzliche Fragestellungen etwa über Strukturen menschlicher Kommunikation, der Wirklichkeit, der filmischen Wirklichkeit und der damit möglichen Macht hineinführen. Die Vehemenz mit der Leni Riefenstahl sich immer wieder davon abgrenzt, sie habe Propaganda betrieben, auf der einen Seite, und die oft genug ebenso polemischen Angriffe gegen sie und ihre Filme auf der anderen Seite, offenbaren ein grundsätzliches Fehlen absoluter Ma stäbe, die es erlauben würden, ihr Werk und ihre Rolle im Dritten Reich ein für alle Mal angemessen zu bewerten. Ohne den Anspruch zu erheben, viel zur Lösung beitragen zu können, soll im Folgenden doch versucht werden, einige Zusammenhänge aufzuspüren, welche die Problematik so scharf wie möglich umrei en.
