Grundanliegen war es, den lehrerzentrierten Unterricht durch Unterrichtsarrangements zu ergänzen, die Schüler erlauben, Lernaufgaben in selbstständiger und autonomer Form zu bearbeiten und sogar selbst zu finden. Die Definition des Begriffes "Offener Unterricht" ist schwierig, weil es sich hierbei um einen Sammelbegriff handelt, der verschiedene Konzepte umfasst. Die heutigen Ansätze eines offenen Unterrichtens sind auf unterschiedliche Einflüsse zurück zu führen, wie zum Beispiel durch die Reformpädagogik, antiautoritäre Erziehungskonzepte und die Notwendigkeit einer vermehrten Orientierung an wissenschaftlichen Methoden. Die Konzepte eines offenen Unterrichts haben aber gemeinsam, dass sie schülerzentriertes, individuelles, autonomes, handlungsorientiertes, lebenslanges und selbstverantwortliches Lernen ermöglichen sollen... Die Forderung nach autonomem Lernen in der Fremdsprachendidaktik wird etwa seit Beginn der 1980er Jahre immer wieder aufgestellt und ist in der Didaktik ein vieldiskutiertes Thema. Das Prinzip der Lernautonomie beschreibt somit eine Strömung der Fremdsprachendidaktik. In der folgenden Ausarbeitung wird definiert und diskutiert, welche Bedeutung mit dem Konzept des autonomen Lernens verknüpft wird und welche Prinzipien für einen Lernerautonomie fördernden Fremdsprachenunterricht gelten.
