De l'�lection de P�pin le Bref comme roi des Francs en 751 � la chute du dernier repr�sentant de la dynastie carolingienne ayant r�gn� en Francie occidentale, Louis V (986-987), les Carolingiens ont tr�s largement �t� les ma�tres du pouvoir en Occident. H�ritiers de la civilisation germanique dont ils sont issus, continuateurs par certains aspects des M�rovingiens qui les ont pr�c�d�s tout en cherchant � retrouver l'h�ritage de l'Empire romain dans sa version chr�tienne, ils ont r�ussi � construire un syst�me politique et culturel original. L'entente �tablie entre le pouvoir temporel et le pouvoir spirituel a contribu� � cet essor, et la Renovatio carolingienne a bien �t� un moment fort de l'histoire de l'Occident m�di�val. De plus, le regnum Francorum d'origine a laiss� la place � l'Empire carolingien par le biais de la politique d'expansion ( dilatatio regni ). Toutefois, l'�poque carolingienne n'est pas faite d'un seul bloc: � une phase ascendante, qui co�ncide avec les r�gnes de P�pin le Bref, Charlemagne et Louis le Pieux � ses d�buts, succ�de une p�riode de crises et de difficult�s, � partir de 825 environ. L'Empire carolingien � proprement parler s'est r�v�l� �ph�m�re (800-843): le partage de Verdun marque l'�chec d�finitif du r�ve de reconstitution de l'Empire romain d'Occident tel qu'il existait avant 476.S'appuyant sur les travaux r�cents qui se sont multipli�s au cours des deux derni�res d�cennies et proposant de nombreux documents partiellement ou enti�rement comment�s, les auteurs font le point sur cette p�riode riche et sur les questions qu'elle ne manque pas de poser: faut-il consid�rer les Carolingiens comme les p�res (ou plut�t les grands-p�res) de l'Europe ?
