L'étude des connecteurs dans l'analyse du discours a été très peu abordée en linguistique. En effet ce n'est qu'au dernier quart du siècle précèdent que quelques travaux linguistiques sur les connecteurs ont vu le jour et ont commencé à peine à esquisser les fondements d'une théorie globale touchant à la fois aux domaines de la syntaxe, de la sémantique et de la pragmatique. Ces études ont été faites dans la plus part des cas in vitro et non pas in vivo; celles-ci se sont ramenées pour l'essentiel à examiner certains connecteurs d'une manière isolée et cela à partir de corpus écrits et ont focalisé leur analyse sur l'étude de la phrase. Néanmoins, ces types de travaux ont perdu de vue le fait suivant, à savoir que les connecteurs tels qu'ils sont pointés dans le discours ou la conversation ne peuvent pas se laisser enserrer dans une structure canonique de la phrase qui peut étouffer par excès ou par défaut toutes les formes d'expressivité inhérentes aux connecteurs quant à leur utilisation explicite ou implicite.
