Premier volume d'une série de huit titres, Les Habits Noirs sont centrés sur les aventures d'André Maynotte. En 1825, celui-ci est un brave artisan armurier qui vit à Caen avec sa ravissante épouse Julie et leur bébé. Simple, honnête et travailleur, il nage dans l'aisance et le bonheur conjugal. Jusqu'à ce qu'un coup de foudre ne vienne détruire cette félicité un riche banquier de la ville, M. Bancelle, est dévalisé. Les 400.000 francs qu'il gardait chez lui dans son coffre-fort à secret sont volés. Et tout accuse André il a travaillé sur le coffre et le voleur a laissé dans l'espèce de piège à loup qui en défend la serrure un brassard de fer qui a protégé son bras et qui appartenait à Maynotte. Celui-ci est jeté en prison, tandis que Julie s'enfuit. Au cours de sa captivité, André, qui ne comprend rien à ce qui lui arrive, est rejoint dans sa cellule par un autre prisonnier qui creusait un tunnel pour s'échapper et s'est trompé de direction... Celui-ci révèle à André le complot dont il a été victime: il existe une organisation criminelle secrète, dite des Habits Noirs. Sa spécialité est de toujours fournir un coupable pour les crimes qu'elle commet: un innocent qu'elle s'arrange pour compromettre, ou un ennemi dont elle veut se débarrasser. Ainsi, les enquêtes s'arrêtent tout de suite et son existence n'est jamais soupçonnée
