Marcellin Berthelot est l'une des personnalités les plus importantes de la fin du XIXe siècle à la fois scientifique de renom, épistémologue reconnu et homme politique de premier plan. Il est à l'origine de nombreuses découvertes en pharmacologie encore utilisées de nos jours et a déposé des milliers de brevets durant sa riche carrière. Dans cet ouvrage, très complet tout en étant facile à lire, il met tout son talent pour vous dévoiler les origines de l'alchimie de manière efficiente et factuelle. Le livre premier est consacré aux sources de l'alchimie et aux témoignages historiques qui lui sont rattachés. Le livre second est consacré à l'étude approfondie des plus grands alchimistes (Hermès Trismégiste, Zosime, Démocrite, Marie la Juive...). Les pratiques et les théories relatives à l'alchimie sont abordées dans les deux livres suivants.

S'intéresser à cette ancienne science reste plus que nécessaire afin de connaitre les fondements de notre chimie moderne. Ce travail intellectuel doit aussi nous permettre de mieux appréhender les courants mystiques et philosophiques qui lui sont associés.

EXTRAIT: L'histoire de l'alchimie est fort obscure. C'est une science sans racine apparente, qui se manifeste tout à coup au moment de la chute de l'empire romain et qui se développe pendant tout le moyen âge, au milieu des mystères et des symboles, sans sortir de l'état de doctrine occulte et persécutée les savants et les philosophes s'y mêlent et s'y confondent avec les hallucinés, les charlatans et parfois même avec les scélérats. Cette histoire mériterait d'être abordée dans toute son étendue par les méthodes de la critique moderne. Sans entreprendre une aussi vaste recherche qui exigerait toute une vie de savant, je voudrais essayer de percer le mystère des origines de l'alchimie et montrer par quels liens elle se rattache à la fois aux procédés industriels des anciens Égyptiens, aux théories spéculatives des philosophes grecs et aux rêveries mystiques des alexandrins et des gnostiques.

Dans mon étude, je m'appuierai d'une part sur les travaux modernes concernant les métaux dans l'antiquité, principalement sur le mémoire de Lepsius relatif aux métaux dans les inscriptions égyptiennes; d'autre part, je recourrai aux plus anciens documents écrits sur l'alchimie.
