Voltaire's Letters on England is a brisk, mischievously lucid tour of English life-its Parliament and parties, its Quakers and stockjobbers, its scientists and skeptics. Written after his English exile in the late 1720s, the book uses England as a daring mirror, reflecting back everything the Ancien R�gime refuses to see about itself. In celebrating constitutional monarchy, rights secured by law rather than royal whim, and a public sphere animated by debate and print, the Letters became a key Enlightenment text and an intellectual fuse laid along the path to the French Revolution.

Voltaire's portrait of England at that time-a society where power is divided, commerce thrives, and conscience is free-also fed the broader Enlightenment conversation that nourished American ideas about limited government and individual rights. He idealizes and sometimes misunderstands England, but his astonishment over a flawed yet functioning constitutional order remains a bracing reminder of how novel such institutions once were, and how explosive the act of describing them could be in a less free land.
