Con l'intento di rendere più pratico il processo di identificazione delle specie, è nato il codice a barre del DNA, un codice a barre simile a quello dei prodotti presenti sugli scaffali del mercato. Il codice a barre del DNA si basa su una breve sequenza di DNA del genoma della specie, sufficiente a discriminarla e classificarla. Per scegliere i geni target per il DNA barcoding, sono stati condotti diversi studi per determinare i geni più favorevoli. L'obiettivo di questo articolo è fornire una rassegna bibliografica dei concetti di base, dello stato attuale della ricerca e dei metodi per classificare e identificare gli esseri viventi sulla base dei genomi degli organismi.
