Before the algorithms, before the streaming platforms, before music became a tap on a screen, there were the DJs the real ones, the ones who lived and breathed every groove, every lyric, and every memory that came with them. Ali Hackett is one of the last of that legendary breed, still on the air at WPPM 106.5 FM every Friday night, still bringing the Golden Era of radio to life for a new generation of listeners. This is his story raw, real, funny, and deeply human told in the only way Ali knows how: straight from the heart.
Growing up in Chester, Pennsylvania, Ali found his calling at the most unlikely of beginnings spinning records at his mother's Friday Night Fish Fry for her girlfriends. Watching how music transformed those women in that room, how it moved them and lit them up, he fell permanently in love with the power of a great song and a well-placed needle on a record. From that living room to the radio booth, from the streets of South Philly to the stages where legends stood, Ali's journey is one of passion, persistence, and an unbreakable bond with the music that raised him.
Ali's Story takes readers through a life that reads like a playlist of the greatest hits of American culture. He encountered James Brown, connected with Motown's Esther Gordy, befriended Brenda Holloway, crossed paths with icons too numerous to name, and built friendships with artists who defined the soundtrack of a generation. Along the way, he survived jail, navigated love, served in the military, discovered his identity as a chef, became an Adjunct Professor at Temple University, and created his own television show all while never losing the warmth and authenticity that have made him one of Philadelphia's most beloved radio personalities.
What sets this memoir apart is not just the star-studded cast of characters or the incredible behind-the-scenes moments from the Golden Era of Black music it is Ali's voice. Honest, humorous, and deeply reflective, he writes about his two fathers, his sisters, his crew, his grief over his mother's passing, and the love story with his wife Allyson that gave his life its most meaningful chapter. This is a book about music, yes, but it is even more a book about family, community, loyalty, and the kind of life that can only be built one relationship at a time.
Testimonials from music legends including Fred Wesley speak to the impact Ali has had not just on the industry but on the people within it. He is described as the go-to authority on the history and facts of Black music, an eloquent speaker with a gregarious spirit that draws people in regardless of background or generation. His weekly show, Salt... Pepper N Memories a cross between American Bandstand and Soul Train, with live cooking is a testament to his belief that the true ingredients for happiness are good food, great music, and the people you love gathered around you.
Ali's Story is a love letter to the music, to the city, to the fans, and to every person who ever danced, cried, or fell in love to a song played by a DJ who truly cared. It is a memoir for music lovers, radio enthusiasts, students of Black cultural history, and anyone who believes that a great life is built not on fame but on showing up fully behind the mic, in the kitchen, and in the hearts of the community you serve. This is Ali Hackett's story, and it is one you will not want to end.
