So kommt man im alltäglichen Leben kaum um die Jugendsprache umher, sie scheint ein ständiger Berührungspunkt zu sein. Grundsätzlich kann die Sprache der Jugendlichen aus sprachwissenschaftlicher Sicht in dem Bereich der Soziolinguistik verankert werden. Dennoch ruft der Terminus Jugendsprache so manche Fragen auf. Auf diese soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit Bezug genommen und schrittweise geklärt werden. Mögliche anfängliche Fragen scheinen eine Erklärung des schwammigen Begriffes und eine allgemeine Definition zu fordern. Des Weiteren herrscht oftmals Unklarheit, beziehungsweise Unstimmigkeit über die Tatsache, ob es sich bei der Sprache der Jugendlichen um eine Varietät oder um einen Stil handelt. Die Fragen nach gewissen Merkmalen der Sprache und Situationen, in denen die Jugendsprache auftritt, sind ebenso berechtigt. Auch die Funktionen dieser Sprechweise stellen ein Rätsel auf. Um jene Fragen zu klären, werden zunächst die Termini Jugend und Jugendsprache definiert. Daraufhin werden die Funktionen und Situationen, in denen die Jugendsprache geläufig ist, vorgestellt. Der Fokus der Arbeit wird auf den Merkmalen der Jugendsprache liegen, wobei hier auf das Lexikon, die Semantik, die Syntax und die Morphologie Bezug genommen wird. Abschlie end folgt ein prägnanter Exkurs zu der Jugendsprachforschung und deren Kritik, wobei hier genauer auf Jugendwörterbücher und die Präferenzhypothese eingegangen wird. Im abschlie enden Fazit sollen die vorherig genannten Fragen endgültig geklärt werden.
