About The Book

The story of Liverpool goes back to its foundation as a borough in 1207 as a base for King John's planned invasion of Ireland. Liverpool continued as a garrison town for centuries after, being razed to the ground in the Civil War and playing a al role in the Jacobite revolt. By the 18th century Liverpool was one of the wealthiest cities in the country, benefitting from the Atlantic trade, which has left a magnificent building legacy. Shipping and trade brought people from all over the world, to create the vibrant industrial, commercial and cultural hub that Liverpool has become in the last couple of centuries. This book will look back over the centuries to uncover the fascinating history of Liverpool. Stories of the city's people, its aristocratic rulers, entrepreneurs, cultural and sporting icons, how it became the 'world in one city', as well as its involvement in the slave trade, the devastation during the Blitz in the Second World War and subsequent rebuilding, bring the history to life, together with illustrations to show where reminders of the of the city's past can still be found. Illustrated throughout, this accessible historical portrait of the transformation that Liverpool has undergone through the ages will be of great interest to residents, visitors and all those with links to the city.

About The Author

Pye, Ken: - Ken Pye is the author of a number of books, and produced the Discover Liverpool series of DVD documentaries. He is a regular contributor to magazines, journals, newspapers, and television, and is the official local historian for Radio City in Liverpool (420,000 listeners per week = 2,500 per hour). He broadcasts on BBC Radio Merseyside (317,000 listeners per week = 1,886 per hour) on a weekly basis, and gives around ten local history lectures every month, as well as operating four tours per week for tourists. He is an Honorary Fellow of Liverpool Hope University and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. A Scouser born and bred, Ken still lives in his home town, Liverpool.
