Living in the Real World. A Math Simulation Game: Sure there are lots of consumer math lessons out there, but this one is just like being in a reality game show. Each student draws a biographical sketch depicting their income, marital status, number of children and education level. Using the statistically accurate data, they plan a budget, purchase a car, buy a house and pay income taxes. Students will learn how to write checks and balance a check book, understand their W-2 statement and their credit card statement. The unit culminates with students planning for their retirement. This is a fabulous way to teach about economics and understanding the real world.

Nancy earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Wyoming and her Masters in Education Administration from Arizona State University. She holds eight educational certificates including elementary education, early childhood education, structured English immersion, math specialist, middle school math, middle school language arts, gifted instruction and education administration. With 30 years of experience in the field of education, her teaching experience includes both private and public education in grades preK-8, test construction, instructional coaching, professional development and extensive curriculum writing. She has taught a wide range of subjects including the four core curriculum (language arts, social studies, math and science) in addition to drama, robotics and video technology. In addition to teaching, Nancy has worked as contract labor for companies, which focused on educational needs. She has written content for web sites, created testing and practice guides and served as a question writer for state assessment tests. Nancy has written multiple supplemental material books and countless workshops. In addition to working as an instructional coach, she oversees a 21st Century Learning Center federally funded before and after school program.
