English summary: Edmond Goblot was a French philosopher and logician known especially for his 1925 essay, La Barriere et le niveau, in which he argued for a cultural perspective and definition of the bourgeoisie. The present volume examines Goblot's philosophical works as both social and intellectual choices within the context of the French Third Republic. Un demi-siecle plus tard, la publication par Pierre Bourdieu de La distinction fournira de nouvelles lettres de noblesse a cette facon originale de regarder les luttes et les segmentations sociales au sein de la societe francaise. La Barriere et le niveau examine les multiples strategies adoptees par la bourgeoisie francaise afin d'exister comme une classe a part entiere. Delaissant l'analyse materialiste des classes au profit d'une perspective culturelle originale, E. Goblot decrypte sans complaisance les moeurs (costume, education, morale...) d'un monde qu'il connait d'autant mieux qu'il en est lui-meme issu. Ne la meme annee qu'Henri Bergson et Emile Durkheim, condisciple de ces derniers a l'Ecole normale superieure, E. Goblot ne beneficiera de la meme aura que ces deux anciens camarades. L'histoire de leurs relations, et de celles plus generalement d'E. Goblot avec ses collegues philosophes de la IIIe Republique, n'en constitue pas moins un prisme original pour comprendre les transformations d'une activite, la philosophie, alors en pleine mutation. Portrait sociologique d'un professeur ordinaire de la IIIe Republique, l'ouvrage opte pour un double parti-pris. En decrivant finement les differentes etapes de la vie et de la carriere d'E. Goblot, il met d'abord en evidence les entrelacs entre trajectoire sociale et choix intellectuels, y compris dans un domaine aussi aride que la logique. Le livre montre ensuite que La Barriere et le niveau n'est pas un accident de parcours intellectuel mais l'application au monde social des theses originales defendues en logique par E. Goblot.
