Résumé Le caractère profondément romanesque de Lord Jim (sa deuxième partie surtout), qui met en scène amour et combats guerriers dans la jungle malaise, a su enflammer des générations de jeunes lecteurs. Joseph Conrad, de son vrai nom Teodor Józef Konrad Korzeniowski herb. Nalecz, né le 3 décembre 1857 à Berditchev (Ukraine - Empire russe) et mort le 3 août 1924 à Bishopsbourne (Kent - Angleterre), d'origine polonaise, il est considéré comme l'un des plus importants écrivains anglais du XXe siècle. Biographie Joseph Conrad est né à Berdytchiv dans l'Empire russe (aujourd'hui en Ukraine), au sein d'une famille de la noblesse polonaise (Szlachta). Son père Apollo Korzeniowski, engagé dans la résistance polonaise, est arrêté en octobre 1861, et envoyé en exil d'abord dans des conditions difficiles au nord de la Russie, puis dans le nord-est de l'Ukraine à partir de 1863. Sa famille le suit, et la mère de Conrad meurt de la tuberculose en avril 1865. Gravement malade lui-même, Apollo Korzeniowski peut rentrer d'exil en 1868. Mais il meurt en mai 1869 à Cracovie, ville alors autrichienne, laissant Conrad orphelin à l'âge de onze ans. Celui-ci est alors confié à son oncle maternel, Tadeusz Bobrowski, qui demeurait à Cracovie, et à qui il devait rester très attaché, entretenant avec lui une correspondance suivie jusqu'à la mort de ce dernier en 1894.
