Ambientato in un contesto preciso, la città di Benevento, cui dedica riferimenti importanti a luoghi e monumenti che ne hanno segnato la storia, il libro racconta le vicende di una donna che si trova a compiere scelte decisive con la convinzione di essere in grado di gestirle, in virtù di un'etica che si è costruita nel tempo e che ritiene incrollabile. Si renderà conto, complice un incontro inaspettato, di quanto labile sia il confine tra integrità e fragilità e come anche i valori che riteneva inderogabili siano destinati a confrontarsi con il caso, che ne minaccia la fermezza, e con le passioni, da cui sembrava essere immune.
Il ruolo dei social è fortemente presente e gioca una parte fondamentale per l'illusione che dà di poter vivere un tradimento senza sensi di colpa e senza inquietudini, almeno inizialmente.
L'incertezza nel fissare le linee della Dormiente del Sannio, con cui inizia e si chiude il romanzo, diventa la metafora dell'ambiguità della natura umana e della vita stessa, laddove rimanda all'impossibilità di definire con chiarezza i confini di un agire, di un sentire, di un volere che spesso sono frenati dalle convenzioni e dalla paura della riprovazione sociale e che si preferiscono vivere nel privato di una relazione che, finché resta virtuale, è vissuta con intensità perché apparentemente priva di macchie ma, quando tenta di concretizzarsi in rapporti fisici, si scontra inevitabilmente con il pudore verso se stessi, il rispetto dell'altro e, in generale, la possibilità dello scacco.
Sullo sfondo, la quotidianità di vite normali, le vicende di una cittadina di provincia, i sentimenti dietro la facciata, le difficoltà di coppia, le amicizie, il dramma del femminicidio.
L'indeterminatezza dei rapporti investe anche la coppia "legittima" nella quale silenzi, omissioni e menzogne aumentano la scarsa penetrazione di due universi psicologici differenti- maschile e femminile - creando equivoci e fraintendimenti. Il marito, verso cui la protagonista si sente in colpa e al cui sentimento sacrifica il proprio, alla fine non è migliore di lei. Ma neanche peggiore.
L'ambiguità emerge e attraversa la vita che, in questo terzo millennio, da reale si fa sempre più inarrestabilmente virtuale.
Lo guardò intensamente: per un attimo, un lungo attimo, il mondo si fermò. Una corrente, calda, complice e viscerale, attraversò i loro sguardi, penetrò attraverso gli occhi fino a giù, nella profondità intima dei loro pensieri. Sembrò che i loro corpi si toccassero e si lasciassero contaminare dall'odore, dal sapore della loro pelle, dei muscoli tesi nel pathos di quell'istante.
